What the earth reveals from its depths

Yolande Bernier's artistic evolution has involved a search into our human origins. Through studies of prehistoric art and Asian Buddhist iconography, she uses her chosen medium, Nihonga, to examine the mysteries of ancient mark-making. Nihonga, an ancient Japanese art form, arrived in Japan along with Zen Buddhism, through India, China and Korea, and is characterized by its use of mineral pigments.

These mineral pigments exhibit both a brilliant richness of permanent colour and a powerful emotional appeal, yielding a medium rich in content. Yolande Bernier creates imagery suggestive of the interior life of the earth, the magnificence of landscape and the beauty of flowers. The contemplative nature of her work, as well as the richness and subtility of the materials used, result in refined artworks of luminous transparency.

For the last twenty-five years the artist has developed her use of Nihonga, to express both her personal vision and physical surroundings. Since 1982, she has had a number of master classes with her mentor, Akira Ito. Facinated and enriched by this far and mysterious culture, Yolande creates a link between Japan and the diverse and natural wilderness of Quebec.
